In a nutshell, “Flattening the Curve” refers to an attempt to stop a spike in the number of new cases. Doctors and officials talk about preventing a sudden increase in new cases. The rationale is, by keeping infection numbers down, we can avoid severe illnesses, deaths, and an overloaded supply system.
